Description

Keyrail is the commercial operator of the Betuweroute, the freight railway line running from the port of Rotterdam to Germany via Zevenaar.
The Betuweroute is now in full use for transporting containers on shuttle trains to and from the hinterland of the Dutch ports.

Keyrail's head office is located at Kijfhoek yard, which is situated between Barendrecht and Zwijndrecht.
Kijfhoek is the largest marshalling yard in the Netherlands and one of the busiest in Europe and can rightly be called the Dutch hub for rail freight transport. Goods trains are assembled at Kijfhoek and freight transport on the Betuweroute is controlled. From Kijkhoek, goods trains go to many destinations at home and abroad. Keyrail takes care of traffic control, capacity allocation and the management and maintenance of the Betuwe Route.

During our visit, Mr Guus de Mol, manager Development & Logistic Solutions of Keyrail, will give introductions regarding Keyrail's functions, various aspects of the Betuwe Route and the development and prospects of rail freight transport. Furthermore, the shunting company of Kijfhoek will be discussed.

As parking facilities are limited at Kijfhoek, we will gather at NS station Barendrecht from where we will travel to Kijfhoek by bus. You can park for free at Barendrecht station at the P+R lot located on the tunnel roof at Zuideinde (follow directions P+R). The bus is on the west side of the station on Stationsweg.
