Ethics in technological risks
Description
Ethical acceptability of technological risks
Technological risks raise ethical questions. Risky technological projects can affect the welfare of others. When is it justified to expose others to dangers? And how should we judge whether a risk is morally acceptable or not?
Examples of technological risks that give rise to heated and emotional debates are cloning, GM food and nuclear energy. Many people fear the possible unwanted consequences of such technologies.
Do we need emotions to judge whether a risk is morally acceptable? This question has direct practical implications: should engineers, scientists and politicians responsible for developing risk policies take the public's emotions seriously or not?
Sabine Roeser, assistant professor of Philosophy TU Delft, will show in an engaging evening programme for Young KIVI NIRIA Engineers on Monday 23 March that emotions are an indispensable normative guide when assessing the ethical acceptability of technological risks. On the basis of propositions, focused on practical examples, there will be a debate after the lecture.
The programme will be as follows:
- 18:30 h Reception with sandwiches;
- 19:00 h Start presentation 'Emotions, rationality and risks';
- 20:30 h Debate based on propositions;
- 21:30 h Drinks;
- 22:00 h Closing;
