KIVI Limburg excursion: Discover the impressive Tagebau Garzweiler

Saturday 20 September 2025, KIVI Limburg is organising a unique excursion to the Tagebau Garzweiler lignite mine in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
This huge open-cast mine is one of the largest in Europe and is a fascinating combination of energy production, technological tours de force and large-scale nature restoration projects.
During this excursion, you will get a rare insight into the world of industrial mining as well as the redevelopment of the landscape into lakes, nature and agricultural areas.

Programme

  • 09:30 am - Departure from Maasbracht by coach towards Grevenbroich (the coach will be present for boarding from ±09:15 am).
  • 11:00 am - Reception at the Informationszentrum, Erftstr. 111, 41517 Grevenbroich.
    • Short introduction by an RWE guide about the mining process, machinery and energy production.
      Tour by touring car through the active mining area, with views of the giant dredge wheel excavators that move up to 240,000 tonnes of material per day.
      Visit to areas where former mining fields are being transformed into lakes, nature and agricultural land.
      Opportunity to ask questions and take photos (where permitted).
  • 14:00 - End of excursion and return to Maasbracht.

  • Duration of excursion: approx. 3 hours (excluding travel time).
  • Language: German (accompanied by RWE guide).
  • Transport: Touring car, included in price.
  • Number of participants: minimum 20, maximum 50.
  • Own contribution:
    • KIVI members: €15
      KIVI members with luxury sandwich*: €20
  • Dress code: Sturdy footwear obligatory; follow all safety regulations from RWE.
  • Lunch/coffee:
    • Option luxury sandwich when booking (see prices above). An email will be sent for choice of sandwich.
      Bring your own lunch possible.
      Coffee/tea on arrival: in consultation with RWE.
  • Registration: No later than 3 September.
