Security in operational technology (OT): how to do it safely?
In this lunch webinar, Kelvin and Joeri Nelemans from the NCSC will take you into the world of OT security. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) works every day to strengthen the digital resilience of 2.4 million companies and organisations. The NCSC is part of the Ministry of Justice and Security ( https://www.ncsc.nl ).
People often talk about IT security, but in OT, security is just as important. It-security focuses on processing, storing and transmitting data, while OT security is about controlling and monitoring physical processes. Threats towards vital infrastructure, such as water treatment, energy distribution, shipping and manufacturing, for example, is a daily reality that organisations face. For an overview on OT incidents see and figure below https://www.computable.nl/2026/02/27/deze-5-ot-incidenten-hebben-de-security-wereld-wakker-geschud/

Then the first question is often, how do you get started? OT has (partly) different legislation and standards frameworks, and there are plenty of subtle differences between IT and OT that require attention for effective implementation of measures. Besides these issues; we also want to take you through how the NCSC looks at risk management; where IT-OT integration, engineering cycles, the OT lifecycle and safety are important aspects to consider. We will conclude with a Q&A.
Kelvin
After studying electrical engineering at TU Delft, Kelvin immediately entered the world of OT where he has worked in many different sectors, for both large international companies and small SMEs both abroad and domestically. Due to his broad interests, he has held many different positions over a period of about 15 years; from project leader and business developer, to software and hardware engineering, commissioning and service, safety and lastly cybersecurity. The last few years he worked for the government and now as OT Coordinator at the NCSC.
Joeri Nelemans
Joeri works as relationship manager at the NCSC. Before that, he held the same position at the Digital Trust Center (DTC), where he was in close contact with partnerships and other SME organisations, where OT plays a (major) role. Before that, Joeri worked as a security officer and IT auditor at a medium-sized municipality and as a crisis consultant.
