The Einstein telescope: will we have a 'CERN' in Limburg?
With the Einstein telescope, Europe is investing in an observatory to arrive at new insights into the origin of the universe, black holes and stars using gravitational waves.
This triangular telescope, with sides 10 kilometres long, will be placed some 200 to 300 metres underground to capture as little noise as possible from activities on Earth.
The observatory is unique of its kind, and is sometimes compared to CERN in Geneva, which is known for having the largest particle accelerator in the world.
Besides its scientific importance, it is important to consider the impact of the Einstein telescope on our region and what innovative products and services will result.
PDhe knowledge institutes, companies, and (local) authorities involved are already working together intensively to maximise the valorisation of the research.
In 2026, the decision will be made on where the Einstein telescope will land, in the Meuse-Rhine region or Sardinia.
Maxime Corvilain, sector manager at POM Limburg and valorisation expert for the Einstein Telescope, tells us why our province, in the Euregion, is the place of choice for this ambitious project.Speaker: Dr Maxime Corvilain
