Report:

The speakers were well matched, Rob Stark and Patrick van Dodewaard of the consulting engineering firm IMd and Rob Doomen of Pieters Bouwtechniek have been working together for years to design wooden buildings. Wooden buildings are taller than I initially imagined. Heights of around 70 metres have already been realised. However, real skyscrapers are not among the possibilities. Wooden buildings are beautiful and durable, but also a lot more expensive than conventional steel and concrete buildings. Sometimes concrete is used because of sound insulation.

Some buildings are demountable and can then be rebuilt in a different location after a number of years.

It was an interesting webinar highlighting the different aspects of building in wood. You can find the presentations on the website (under 'Documents'). The answers to the chat questions will be added shortly.

Webinar Building in wood

The sense and nonsense of building structures in wood

Currently, we are seeing increasing demand in practice for buildings built from a timber construction, often motivated by sustainability considerations. This makes sense, as wood is basically a sustainable material that is reusable and allows "CO2" storage. Structures are demountable and therefore circular. But how sustainable a building constructed from wood really is is still a quest. It often also depends on the function that should be possible in the building.

The speakers demonstrate this using examples where wood is included as a construction material. Sometimes, the decision was made not to use wood in certain projects. It is precisely by showing these kinds of projects as well that a lively discussion can arise about the sense and nonsense of using wood as a construction material.
