Currently, about 10 per cent of electricity use is generated sustainably. If all goes well, this will become 50 per cent in the next 20 years. Transport in the Netherlands will be electric in 20 years. Making clean hydrogen gas also requires electricity. This means double the need. At the same time, the aim is to take the built environment off gas. This again requires doubling the number of electricity generators, for more than six months in the year. Air traffic will also increase sharply, and in the future people will start making paraffin using electricity. As a result of all this, by the year 2050, we will have an electricity demand 5-6 times greater than the current consumption. Therefore, power plants will continue to be needed. Nuclear power then offers a solution. Ronald Schram discusses the role nuclear energy can play in the electricity mix.
