Operations & management Installations
Description
For ensuring the continuity of business processes and controlling risks in complex buildings, such as at Schiphol Airport, where large numbers of passenger flows, 230 shops, many offices and 60 catering establishments have to be accommodated simultaneously.
Since 1998, the government, through European regulations, has imposed increasingly stringent requirements for and fire safety (EN 13501) on complex buildings with areas larger than 1,000 m2 and safe operational management, electrical safety (EN 50110).
By applying integral risk management and developing its own policy, the performance level of (fire) protection is adequate and optimisation of the infrastructure is possible using vulnerability analyses. This has led to a system of own guidelines, design principles and design rules for buildings, fire safety provisions, power supply ICT network infrastructure, process equipment, systems, fire safety provisions. In addition, specific fire safety and installation requirements have been set for materials and installations for furnishings and interiors in public areas.
Explanation
Schiphol Group has anticipated this by applying the Fire Risk Management methodology for the Terminal Complex at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol since 1998. This fire safety and installation policy supports the continuity of business processes in the Airport City. The complex buildings of the Terminal Complex at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol contain a large number of technical installations and systems. These installations and systems include sensitive electronic equipment for information processing, telecommunications (data and voice) and the detection of persons and baggage, The undisturbed operation of the interplay of these devices and systems within the limited space of the Terminal Complex requires careful planning of emission and immunity, or Electromagnetic Compatibility (INSTALLATIONS).
Based on the 2009 Installations Design Guideline, the installations management plan for the Terminal Complex has been implemented. Service areas and EM zones have been established for the Terminal's 15,000 spaces, and ongoing measurements of installations and systems are carried out for verification. The measurement results confirm that minimum installation requirements should be imposed on electrical and electronic equipment, systems and power supply systems to be robust for operation. This distinguishes between residential- light industrial- and heavy industrial environments. The choice of ICT network cabling and installation technology also plays a major role here to ensure the operation of radio systems and wireless ICT networks
