Organisational systems
Description
Group dynamics processes are still described using the traditional team development models of Tuckman and others (with the well-known four phases: forming, storming, norming and performing) from 1965. They describe a number of conflicts that are seen as necessary or inevitable for development processes. Of course, the process of team development is often not flawless and, unfortunately, the conflicts described are often recognisable in practice. But what can you do with them in your organisation? Wouldn't it be better to focus on what is needed for harmonious organisational development instead of on what it looks like when that fails.
All around us we can find numerous natural systems: plants form vegetations, stars are part of galaxies, organs do not stand alone but work together, and so on. When these natural systems have favourable conditions, they develop spontaneously. If we can create the same favourable developmental conditions for our own organisations, they too appear to grow into a community with maximum synergy.
This certainly does not require laissez-faire leadership. Alertness is needed not to unintentionally hinder the self-organising capacity of teams and organisations. The seven natural conditions for team and organisation development are:
1. shared mission (right to exist)
2. trust (commitment)
3. sharing resources (efficiency)
4. flexible structure (predictability)
5. win- win cooperation (effectiveness)
6. feedback (manageability)
7. dynamic balance (integral quality)
If you recognise and support these natural development conditions in your own organisation, you can often prevent resistance and help overcome any blockages.
