Passive building
Description
A passive building is extra well insulated. When building in heavy materials such as stone or concrete, it is desirable to bring the mass of those materials inside the insulation as much as possible.
Insulation on the outside of the building is therefore attractive when using heavy building materials. Passive buildings are breathable. A passive building is oriented to the south. Deviations of 20 to 30 degrees from the pure south are still allowed. The south orientation allows utilisation of free solar heat in the heating season. But in summer, this south orientation is even more important to prevent overheating. The solar track has an interesting built-in control mechanism for this. A passive building has large windows on the south side and much smaller windows on the north side. A passive building also has internal zoning. That is, rooms where heat is desired are on the south side. That is: living rooms, children's rooms and so on on the south side. Rooms that produce heat or do not need heat are on the north side. These are: kitchens, staircases, storage rooms, garages and the like.
