Description

Although rail transport is one of the safest modes of transport, rail safety is regularly on the media and political agenda.
Recent breakdowns and the accident near Amsterdam earlier this year, often prompt new discussions and investigations.
Hajo Hajonides discusses the various elements of rail safety, which is different from social safety. It addresses issues such as the development of rail safety and rail safety systems and the current status regarding their operation, benefits and shortcomings. It will also discuss what the so often mentioned ERTMS system is and what developments there are in rail safety from the Dutch and European perspective
