Season opening Sailing on the Waal
From the water it looks different
Work to give the Waal near Nijmegen more space has been completed for more than a year. This involves the side channel and Veur island. The Gelderland region had invited KIVI members to come and see things from the river for the opening of the season. We had hired the Pancake Boat for this outing. Interest was very high, with more than 50 people attending. You sailed past all the new architectural works. An impressive sample of how we in the Netherlands try to manage water. It was a bit of a shame that we were only allowed to sail a short distance into the side channel. We could have gone further but that was forbidden. Just after the new stadsburg de Oversteek, we had to turn around. This stadburg is not part of the "Room for the River" project but was built in the same period. A "competition" was held for the design of the burg and this apparently lightweight construction won. This was the second time we made this trip but unlike the first time we had fine weather. It was a successful tour.
