Description

The current economic malaise, increasing regulations on reducing emissions and the expected structural increase in oil prices are strong drivers for shipowners to sail more sustainably with their vessels. 'Slow steaming' as currently widely practiced provides substantial fuel savings but is mainly driven by the economic tide. Structurally lower service speeds also open up prospects for propellers with significantly higher efficiency.
In addition to developing more efficient ships and propellers, it is also possible to achieve significant fuel savings with existing ships, for example by better routing to weather, current and water depth, by optimising trim, periodic cleaning of hull and propeller or by using so-called Energy Saving Devices.
Fuel saving directly contributes to a reduction in emissions, a switch to cleaner fuels can further reduce these emissions
