Engineering Tournament 2017
The Engineering Tournament is an annual engineering competition for pupils from all primary school groups. The winners from the different regions compete against each other in the finals. This was held on Thursday 1 June 2017 at the Open Air Museum in Arnhem. The president of KIVI region Gelderland, Albert ten Kate is part of the jury.
On this finals day, KIVI itself was also represented. We had a stand at the "Tournament Place" right next to the stage where the award ceremony took place. An excellent spot. We chose to show the children the circular process. We did this using the special set-up where we shredded plastic cups, then turned these shreds into a wire that we used in the 3D printer. This turned out to be a hit, hundreds of children were able to learn about the circular process at our, the Royal Institute of Engineers. Sometimes I did have the idea that boys liked shredding plastic cups, breaking them. Using the 3D printer, we made rings with a KIVI logo, so the children could show at home where they had made the ring.
In front of our tent, we had set up another crowd-pleaser, water games. It was fun to show the little participants that water does not just run from the top bottle into the bottom one. This was perfectly explained by our "water man", Arnold Groot. I think you already know it, but still it is about aeration. With the other water games, you could get a bit wet but that didn't matter because the weather was excellent.
KIVI contributed along with the other exhibitors to promote engineering. Not only with the primary school children but also with their supervisors.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this successful day.
On behalf of KIVI region Gelderland,
Gerard Thomas
Description
The Engineering Tournament is an engineering competition for pupils from all primary school groups and the winners from the regions get to compete against each other in the finals. Some 600 children will participate in the finals and many of the jury members teach at a high school or university (are there in togas).
The objective is to give children an extra development in this way.
What do the children learn;
They are introduced to basic science principles.
They learn to experiment and develop creativity.
They are challenged to work according to a pre-designed work plan.
They learn to work together.
They discover that science and technology is fun; much less complicated than they might have thought.
On this final day, stands are set up at a central location (where the award ceremony is also held) by organisations and companies that want to show engineering to children. KIVI Gelderland will also be present. We will show the circular process using a 3D printer. The children can make something themselves from old plastic. By doing so, we as KIVI Gelderland hope to give attention, in a "hip" way, to the STEM subjects and the importance of engineering for the future.
You are most welcome to attend this TOERNOOI!
