Old Rhine A4 aqueduct
Description
The original crossing of RW A4 with the Oude Rijn river at Leiderdorp consisted of a bascule bridge. When the bridge was opened to allow shipping to pass, traffic was blocked to such an extent that long queues arose.
To improve traffic flow over the A4, it was decided to widen it from 2x2 to 2x3 lanes and to build the junction as an aqueduct at the Oude Rijn.
The deepening of the A4, which includes the aqueduct, at the Leiden and Leiderdorp sites will also improve the integration of the A4 into the landscape and remove the barrier between the areas.
