Description

Architecture centre AORTA will give us a guided tour of the Utrecht station area to explain the change there.

In the referendum of 15 May 2002, the inhabitants of Utrecht chose to redevelop its Stationsgebied. The approach to this area will bring many changes to Utrecht in the coming years. In any case, the Stationsgebied will have two striking glass and steel buildings, which will determine 'the new face' of the modern city centre. A station hall with an undulating roof and a 43-metre-high glass Music Palace on the newly dug canal. Herman Hertzberger was asked by the Stationsgebied Development Project Bureau to make a design for the Music Palace. The future Music Palace will soon house the SJU House, pop centre Tivoli and Music Centre Vredenburg. The Music Palace will be a huge contrast to the current music centre, which was designed 25 years ago by the same Hertzberger.

Architectural firm Benthem Crouwel, designers of the Schiphol public transport terminal, has now also created a design for a new station in Utrecht. In the middle of the city, the terminal will soon be used by two-and-a-half times as many passengers as at Schiphol. Besides bringing train, bus and tram together under one roof, the OVT will also be an important connecting point between city districts. Exactly what the further changes are and when they will take place will be explained in detail during the circular walk and on the basis of models and (interactive) computer animations in the Stationsgebied Information Centre.
