CU2030, Utrecht Lunetten conversion
Description
Randstadspoor is a new, extended train network in the Utrecht region. There will be more tracks and new stations, allowing more trains to run and stop at the new stations. This way, Randstadspoor provides better public transport in the region; also to and from the five new VINEX districts. At the same time, express and intercity trains can continue unhindered on their own tracks (by expanding the number of tracks between Vleuten/Leidsche Rijn and Houten).
Construction of Randstadspoor started in 2005 and will be completed in 2015. The main components of the project are:
- the construction of seven new stations and the renovation of three existing stations;
- doubling of the track between Vleuten/Leidsche Rijn and Utrecht Centraal (from two to four tracks), between Utrecht Centraal and Utrecht Lunetten (from four to six to eight tracks (depending on the location)) and between Utrecht Lunetten and Houten Castellum (from two to four tracks);
- free crossings, noise barriers and turning facilities for trains.
KIVI NIRIA Utrecht, together with ProRail, is organising a presentation on the VleuGel-Randstadspoor project and a tour of the construction work in Utrecht Lunetten. At the moment, the noise barriers are being built, the new subway at Utrecht Lunetten station, and the completion of the viaduct over the A27 and the preparation for the work on doubling the track are taking place
