Future developments Utrecht CS
Description
Utrecht is revamping its Station area. This was necessary. Since the construction of Hoog Catharijne, the pressure on the historical city centre has increased considerably: the number of inhabitants has been growing at a rapid pace for years, more and more people take the train, bike and car and Utrecht Central Station was too small for the number of travellers.
In addition, there was overdue maintenance and degeneration in the old Stations area, as well as the long-cherished desire to get the water back into the canal. With the construction of the new Station Area we are tackling all these things simultaneously.
The historic city centre and the Station Area were two separate parts of the city centre; these parts will be more closely connected to form one coherent whole.
The quality of life and safety will be improved. There will be more room for culture, housing, relaxation, shops, better accessibility and the water will return to the canal. At the same time, we are making the area more sustainable: more water and greenery, less asphalt, more space for public transport, bicycles and pedestrians and energy-efficient buildings.
The construction of the new station area is a close collaboration between the Municipality of Utrecht and private parties such as Klepierre, NS, ProRail and Jaarbeurs.
On Friday afternoon, 16 June, KIVI members are welcome to join the Stationsgebied development team of the Municipality of Utrecht.
The development team has its own information centre in the central hall of the new City Office on the Jaarbeurs side of Utrecht Central Station.
