ProRail's traction power supply system provides trains with electrical energy (traction). With an overhead line, substations, and cables to the regional network operators, this forms its own electricity network. The coming years are expected to see strong growth in the number of passengers using rail public transport. This calls for more frequent rides and longer train runs, and thus a changing energy demand. With this, ProRail and NS face the major challenge of adapting their energy demand and energy supply to this increasing transport demand.

In this lecture, ProRail and NS explain how the traction energy supply system works, how energy is purchased, what initiatives there are to save energy and how we do this sustainably.
