Ir. Martijn Smitt, Executive Director at Ballast Nedam, will take us through the latest tunnelling techniques, using concrete examples from his work, such as the immersion tunnels Wijkertunnel in Velsen, the Caland Tunnel and Blankenburgtunnel in Rotterdam, the Venice flood barrier as part of the MOSE project, the North-South Metro Line tunnel project in Amsterdam, the Limerick Tunnel in Ireland and the Metro Line IV Prague tunnel in the Czech Republic, the Busan Geoje immersion tunnel in Korea and currently the Khor al Zubair immersion tunnel in Basra, Iraq. Both the Busan Geoje immersion tunnel project in Korea and the Khor al Zubair project in Iraq were 'life-changing' experiences for himself and the people he worked with. These projects prove that a Dutch company delivers world-class work: "constructing infrastructure that serves the people of the world in their mobility, wellbeing and safety".
