Autumn walk Deurnsche Peel
Description
On Sunday 21 September, we will kick off autumn with a family walk. Formally autumn then, because of course we are hoping for a beautiful late summer day. This year, our family walk will take you through Deurnsche Peel.
Deurnsche Peel is a unique area in south-east Brabant, on the border with the province of Limburg. Large-scale peat extraction began here at the end of the 19th century, after which the land was reclaimed and developed into agricultural land. In the places that were not reclaimed, there are now natural values that approximate the original raised bog. In addition, the area has cultural-historical significance. The villages Griendtsveen and Helenaveen have protected village views.
Under the leadership of the management committee "Peelvenen", various parties, such as ZLTO, province of North Brabant and Limburg, Staatsbosbeheer, municipality of Asten and various nature and recreation organisations, are working together on the future of the area. The Peelvenen project aims to restore raised bogs. But also to offer prospects for agricultural development, recreation and tourism and focus on the liveability of the area. Another important condition is the preservation of the cultural-historical values such as the Koningshoeven and the characteristic lanes.
The project leader for the Deurnsche Peel, Fred Bongers, will guide us through this area and tell us about the planning task and choices that had to be made for this. Along the way, we will enjoy this unique nature reserve. After the walk, we will traditionally conclude with a joint lunch
