Claus power station during reactivation/test phase
The Claus power plant in Maasbracht, near Roermond is named after H.R.H. Prince Claus. He officially commissioned the power plant in 1978. It is one of the largest gas-fired power plants in the Netherlands and has been part of RWE since 2009.
At the Claus power plant, units A and B (left part photo) were commissioned in the late 1970s. Unit C (right part photo, the 3 air intakes of the 3 gas turbines) was built in 2012 to be able to react quickly to the changing power production of wind turbines and solar farms. Unit B was modified to achieve the high efficiency of almost 60% when combined with unit C. Its capacity is around 1300MW. In 2014, the entire plant was decommissioned due to insufficient demand for electricity generated from gas. This was partly due to cheap coal from the US and the supply of subsidised power from German wind farms and solar farms.
With the expected closure of some coal-fired power plants, the Claus power plant will be reactivated, making sufficient capacity available again. RWE expects to use mainly high-calorific gas from abroad.
During this unique visit of the power plant in re-activation/test phase, parts will be visited, which are otherwise not accessible.
