Description

Following the Dutch Year of Mines, we invite our members to visit the former mine at the Mining Museum in Beringen, Belgium.

Coal mines play an important role in the history of both Dutch and Belgian Limburg. In Beringen, the mining past is still very much present: the former mine site is almost completely preserved and constitutes a gem of industrial archaeology, the surrounding garden suburbs have largely retained their charm and individuality, and the former slag heaps have been transformed into walking areas. The Beringen mine site has also been home to the Mining Museum since 1986. Here you can immerse yourself in the mining past.

With the guided tour "Miners' Trail" we take a walk with a guide/old miner through the buildings near the mine, such as the bathing hall, lamp room etc.... Then we visit the underground simulation. An old miner tells us about the past and introduces us to this coal mine and the rules and customs that prevailed here back then. We also hear what life was like in Limburg miner's families.

After the tour, we walk across the grounds to the restaurant of the mining museum where we can enjoy a real miner's breakfast with bread, bacon, eggs and coffee/tea as lunch. If you wish, you can visit the mining museum on your own at your own time and expense after noon. You can also take another walk on the mine ridge. In this walk of about 5 km you will get a nice view of the total mining area and its surroundings.

The cost includes guided tour, underground simulation and lunch with coffee/tea
