You will find here the report on the visit to the Ooijen-Wanssum area development project.

Mooder Maas is the name of the contractor combination Dura Vermeer and Ploegam that is carrying out a large-scale project, costing about €240 million, in North Limburg, commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat, Province of Limburg, Municipality of Venray, Municipality of Horst aan de Maas and Water Board Limburg. The name "Mooder Maas" comes from the idea that the river Maas is an important "lifeline" for the Province of Limburg: the mother of the province. After years of preliminary work on permits, designs and planning, the physical work started at the end of 2017 and this immense project will be completed by the end of 2020.

The purpose of this project includes better protection of the project area against high water, which this area still faced in 1993 and 1995.

In addition, a number of road construction works are being carried out, and following this work, a different contractor combination will realise an expansion of the industrial port of Wanssum

During this excursion, a presentation will be given on various aspects facing the complex project, including :

  • As little disruption as possible to economic activities in the area;
  • Close contact and consultation with businesses, residents and interest groups;
  • Construction of various engineering structures (bridges, bicycle tunnel, roundabouts);
  • Construction of high-water channels, reactivation of an old Meuse arm and construction/improvement of dykes;
  • Innovative techniques in implementation and landscaping;
  • Dealing with calculated and unexpected problems, in technical and cultural engineering.
