On Wednesday 13 September 2017, Hein Brat - chairman of KIVI Department of Informatics - gave a lecture for 33 KIVI members in North Holland on the much-encompassing concept of Big Data. It soon became clear that the word 'Big' does not fully cover the load as it refers not only to the amount of data, but especially to the complexity of collecting, storing, making accessible and analysing large flows of information. Moreover, besides the technical aspects, there are many societal, legal (e.g. privacy and security) and commercial challenges that need to be managed. A simple way to define this complexity is by the following properties:

- Variety - variety

- Verocity - aggressiveness (in this context mutation rate, so data is constantly subject to change)

- Volume - quantity

- Veracity - truthfulness

- Variability - variability

- Visualisation - visibility

- Value

Because of this technical and social relevance, Big Data is an important spearhead within KIVI. Thus, the KIVI Chair in Big Data Science was appointed at TU Delft in 2015 and several working group sessions and master classes have already been held. On 4 October 2017, a state-of-the-art Information Technology laboratory - called KIVI-0070Lab - will be opened in the attic of the historic KIVI building in The Hague to develop, test, learn, exchange knowledge and connect parties in the field of Big Data and especially its security aspects. These parties can be technical and financial companies, educational and knowledge institutions, national and international (e.g. The Hague Security Delta) governments, etc.

Description

The board of KIVI Region Noord-Holland hereby invites you to a lecture by Hein Brat on Big Data and related topics.

Nowadays, not a day goes by without us reading or hearing something about Big Data, Internet of Things, Connected Cars, etc. Various Big Data activities are also taking place within KIVI - including the appointment in 2015 of the KIVI Chair in Big Data Science at TU Delft - various working group sessions and master classes - and recently the realisation of a high-tech IT lab (called KIVI-0070Lab) for developing, testing, learning, exchanging knowledge and connecting parties in the field of Big Data security.

Besides the technical aspects and the complexity of collecting, storing and analysing large streams of information, the average IT layman is further confused by the complicated societal (privacy/security), legal and commercial sides of Big Data.

This lecture aims to give an overview of Big Data (Science), with emphasis on the technical and societal aspects and on KIVI's involvement in the whole.
