Bio-circular Composites, Company visit NPSP
In 1998, Natural Powered Speed Products (NPSP) was founded, initially to work on the world's first large construction made of flax that could be subjected to heavy mechanical loads: the catamaran Flaxcat. Together with students from TU-Delft, NPSP builds the Nuna I, the solar car that finishes in first place in the World Solar Challenge in Australia in 2001.
Thereafter, the company develops into 'NPSP Composites', industry leader in making fibre-reinforced plastic products more sustainable with a Mission to reduce the environmental impact ever further. Natural raw materials, production techniques ahead of legislation, products that last longer and generate less waste and at a good price-quality ratio. The well-known Rijkswaterstaat hectometre signs and ANWB toads are relatively small. An example of upscaling are the complete, prefabricated facade panels used as an outer shell to insulate existing houses.
NPSP's eco-friendly composites can be recognised by the Nabasco® (Nature-based composites) label with current products 3010, 5010 and 8010 (30%, 50% and 80% bio supplemented still with petroleum-based resins, respectively). Nabasco 9010 (with 90% bio) is ready for the market and the final target is 10010, 100% bio manufactured with bio-resin from residual products of the sugar industry, natural oils or lactic acid.
Until 2014, the products were manufactured by NPSP itself (about 30 people). Following the decision to outsource manufacturing to partner companies, NPSP is mainly engaged in Research & Development (total now 7 person members). During our tour of the laboratory, we could see how research is being done on large-scale bio-resin applications.
The company visit was attended by 22 KIVI members.
The board of KIVI Region North Holland has the pleasure of inviting you to attend a company visit to NPSP Composites.
After the visit of King Willem Alexander - in November 2018, together with President Halimah Yacob of Singapore - we, as the Royal Society of Engineers, naturally cannot be left behind..
Based on residual materials - such as cut roadside grass, recycled toilet paper, recycled textiles, waste cane and flax - NPSP makes sustainable, fibre-reinforced plastics for construction, design, mobility and industry. The company leads the industry in making composites more sustainable and works on all fronts to continuously reduce its environmental impact. Natural raw materials, production techniques that are ahead of legislation, products that last longer and generate less waste and at good value for money. Well-known NPSP products are the hectometre signs for the province of Brabant, toadstools for the ANWB and the noses of leading trains.
Kind regards,
Tim Timmermans
Chairman KIVI Region North Holland
