Panama Canal capacity expansion
In 1914, the first ship passed through the Panama Canal. Construction was difficult. Started by the French, (23000 killed by yellow fever and malaria) finished by the Americans.
Before World War II, the construction of a new canal had already started. Early this century, plans gained momentum. The aim is to have the project completed by 2014 (100 years after the first ship). The civil section was awarded in August 2009. Iv-Infra and Heerema are engineering and supplying 16 Noordersluis lock gates at IJmuiden. The largest door is 57m wide, 35m high and 10m thick. It weighs 3,000 tonnes, is cathodically protected against corrosion and is earthquake-proof (max 80mm of movement).Ir Hendri Koop of Iv-Infra, an engineering firm, gave an interesting and very successful presentation. There was a large turnout of 37 members.
