On 18 January, we opened the new year with drinks, good wishes, lunch and the lecture by Prof L.A.G. (Leo) Wagemans on Art and works of art, subtitled: The sense and nonsense of form. Wagemans showed how the Romans built artworks/bridges and the development of bridge forms through the use of steel and concrete. The architect/constructor used to be united in one person. Today, architect and structural engineer work together to arrive at a beautiful and constructively correct design. The architect looks at form, colour, beauty. The structural engineer looks for logical, possible and
economic solutions. Many examples of good and not so good solutions were shown and discussed. Among the good solutions were The Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam and the three Calatrava-designed bridges in Hoofddorp. The speaker also showed images of student competitions in building spans with beer crates, sand and spaghetti .The enthusiastic and playful way of talking, with many questions, made the time fly. There were 45 participants. A good start to the year.

Description

The board of KIVI-Niria division Noord-Holland invites you and your partner to the New Year meeting with lecture on Wednesday 18 January 2012.

Large civil works, such as bridges, have been called works of art for centuries.
Over the past 20 to 30 years, there has been a tendency to also see/design these works of art as Art with a capital K, such as the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam.
Prof. L.A.G.(Leo) Wagemans, emeritus professor of structural engineering at Delft, will give a lecture on bridges with a K or k.
The subtitle of his talk is: Zin en Onzin van de vorm
