New Year's meeting & lecture North Pole
The new year was opened with drinks, lunch and good wishes. Then Ms Drs Martine van de Heuvel - Greve gave a lecture on "Knowledge for a sustainable Arctic". Van den Heuvel is a marine biologist at IMARES Wageningen University.
The North Pole is attracting strong interest.
Retreating sea ice is freeing up space for new activities such as oil and gas extraction, shipping and tourism. Not only oil companies and environmental organisations are active in the area, but also researchers. These are studying the changing Arctic ecosystems and how new activities affect them. To understand the complex interrelationships, knowledge is needed.
Using beautiful images, Van de Heuvel told about her research on Svalbard into possible effects of new activities. By developing new knowledge, she hopes to contribute to the international dialogue on where and how new activities can take place.
The meeting ended with the film "Knowledge for a Sustainable Arctic".
Van de Heuvel told her story in an expert and heartwarming way.
There were 28 listeners, who made it a lively meeting.
