After reception at the NIKHEF, the 30 KIVI participants were given a highly intriguing lecture by Marcel Vreeswijk (one of the international scientists of ATLAS). In a clear and illustrated story, it became clear to those present how much further science has come after Einstein. Via all kinds of particle discoveries for which a Nobel prize was awarded again this year, we now know something about matter such as the Higgs particle.

An extremely instructive lecture even for non-physical engineers and the many good questions indicated that the subject matter had landed well in the lecture hall. This was followed by a tour of the NIKHEF, where it was explained how cosmic rays are everywhere and nowhere and can be made visible. The Mediterranean Sea "measuring spheres" project was excellently explained by scientist Ivo van Vulpen and all participants were impressed by this Dutch science institute.

Description

Nikhef was founded in 1975 as a partnership of the FOM ( fundamental research matter), the VU and UVA from Amsterdam, the Radboud University Nijmegen and the University of Utrecht.
At Nikhef, there are two research areas:
PARTICULARS Physics and ASTRO Physics
This excursion will highlight the field of PARTICULARS physics.
