Prof Alexander Schrijver, University of Amsterdam and Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science, told us about Optimal Combining. Those who combine like to do so optimally. Whether you combine the furniture in your house or your shopping, or arrange the table and pair your friends, optimality counts A school wants to combine classes and teachers in an optimal school schedule, railways want optimal train combinations and a company wants to combine assignments in optimal work packages. The field that investigates such issues is called combinatorial optimisation. It leads to fundamental questions about the complexity of combinatorial problems. Professor Schrijver explained this to us using the famous trade passenger problem and the making of the timetable of the Dutch Railways. Prof Lex Schrijver has received many awards and recognitions, including the prestigious Spinoza Prize in 2005. Schrijver managed to captivate us extremely well, partly by explaining a difficult subject matter with great humour. There were 29 listeners.

Description

Optimal Combining, Prof Dr Alexander Schrijver. University of Amsterdam and Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science.

Anyone who combines likes to do so optimally. Whether you combine the furniture in your house or your shopping, or arrange the table and pair your friends, optimality counts.
A school wants to combine classes and teachers in an optimal school schedule, railways want optimal train combinations, and a company wants to combine assignments in optimal work packages.
The field that investigates such issues is called combinatorial optimisation. It leads to fundamental questions about the complexity of combinatorial problems. Professor Schrijver will explain this on the basis of the famous commercial traveller problem and of making the timetable for the Dutch Railways.
Prof Lex Schrijver has received many awards and recognitions, including the prestigious Spinoza Prize in 2005
