ir J.C.M. van Dijk spent 4 years living and working for Shell in China on the Hanhai project in Guandong province. A refinery and chemical complex worth $8 billion.

The talk was mainly about negotiations with the Chinese client - customs and negotiating tactics and was peppered with anecdotes.

Mentioned were, among others: --the lunches and dinners -gaining trust (Quanxi) -seniority -very many Chinese at the table, all of whom speak and want comments - "secret" negotiations -the women are very honouredmannered and have influence over their husbands in decision-making -China is not a developing country (already had 40 refineries in 1994) -very many political leaders and their wives are well educated abroad -also because of the planned economy, a profit and loss account/balance sheet/profitability of the existing refineries is/was unknown.

Finally, the refinery startup in 2009 at 250 000 barrels per day.

An interesting lecture. There were 26 participants.
