ALV with lecture on Big Data
Description
After a short East Region General Assembly, there will be a lecture by Professor Djoerd Hiemstra: What is (possible with) Big Data?
Big Data refers to datasets that are so large and/or complex that regular processing is insufficient. This refers to data storage, but also -transport, -integration, -management, -analysis, -in short, everything needed to extract information from it. Google was the first to develop an infrastructure where large amounts of data were processed on clusters of standard PCs, later followed by Hadoop open source software from Yahoo and others. This approach has had a major impact on data research at UTwente. Its results are applied, among others, to the Dutch supercomputer SURFsara.
In the master programme 'Managing Big Data', students at UTwente are trained to become data scientists of the future. The programme covers, among other things, storage systems, data reduction, new programming languages and search structures, and new database paradigms. During the programme, students will work independently with datasets with a size of many billions of items, coming from spiders (web crawlers) or collected tweets. What unprecedented possibilities this offers, we hope to hear this evening.
