Jubilee trip KIVI NIRIA North
Description
A multi-day anniversary and study trip/excursion. Featuring, the special monuments of industrial archaeology as well as the good atmosphere.
Destination: south-west England (the very pretty counties of Devon & Somerset.)
In cooperation with Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society and other heritage managers, among others.
Visits to:
- Bear Quarry Caves. An underground quarry from Roman times that provided stone for 24 English cathedrals, including Exeter and St Pauls, parts of Westminster Abbey, Tower of London, Hampton Court and Windsor Castle.
- Morwelham Quay. A trip back to 1860, including museum and visitor centre around a mine and harbour works of the Tamar River. Highlight is a narrow gauge railway ride followed by an exploration of the George & Charlotte copper mine deep underground.
- Saltash Bridge. A visit to the world-famous railway bridge over the Tamar River. A unique design by I.K.Brunel (1850) with two - 139 metres long - lens-shaped iron girders over 30 metres above the river with conventional sheet steel side spans. (total bridge length 667 metres).
- Plymouth Gin Distillery. A tour of the world's oldest working gin distillery. including drinking a gin cocktail.
- South Devon Railway. A working visit to this privately owned steam railway company, with a train ride on the 11km railway line through the beautiful River Dart valley. Plus guided tour/explanation of the overall company.
- Exeter City. A stay on your own in this beautiful capital of Devon with its many attractions (including an optional boat trip on the River Exe perhaps?)
Day 1: Air flight Amsterdam - Bristol v.v. with KLM Cityhopper (departure 16:40). Transfer to hotel in Exeter.
Day 2: Visit to Beer Quarry Caves.
Day 3: Morwelham Quay
Day 4: Visit Saltash Bridge; Plymouth Gin Distillery & South Devon Railway.
Day 5: Visit Exeter City on your own (morning)
Day 5: Transfer to Bristol International Airport & return flight Bristol - Amsterdam with a KLM Cityhopper.
Included in the trip price:
- 4 nights' accommodation with breakfast at the Premier Inn in Exeter.
- Transport in England depending on number of participants with luxury minibuses or (partly) public transport.
- 3 lunches and 2 dinners outside the hotel.
- Own free time in Exeter.
NOT included in the travel sum:
