Hydraulic fracturing by NAM in Nederla
After getting acquainted with some members of the Groningen Engineers Association, Mr Pestman began an extremely interesting and technical presentation of Fraccing.
Besides the technical challenges, distinctions between fraccing and shale gas extraction and the risks involved were also reviewed.
All in all, an extremely interesting lecture.
Thanks GIV !
Description
Hydraulic fracturing, now called "fracking" in the media, has been used since the 1950s. It is a technique to enhance gas and oil production in poorly permeable rocks. When extracting shale gas, this technique is indispensable. In extraction of conventional gas, as is done by NAM in the Netherlands, the technique is sometimes applied. This lecture will first go through the concept of fracking, methods to estimate production enhancement and the design of a frac. Then the operational implementation of a frac will be discussed, followed by modern fraccing techniques and finally the safety, environmental and nuisance concerns that are also prevalent in the Netherlands. Although NAM does not engage in shale gas extraction, shale gas and its differences from conventional gas extraction will also be briefly discussed. Bart Pestman works at Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij B.V. as Senior Production Technologist.
