Infoversum Groningen, modern 3D theatre
Description
Infoversum is housed on the Ebbinge Quarter site in Groningen city centre, the creative quarter of Groningen. Infoversum is a sustainable building, and forms an innovative element in the Groningen skyline. The unique design and the Corten steel constructions give a new impulse to the inner city architecture.
Sustainable
Infoversum is a local and sustainable initiative. A broad Groningen building consortium was brought together for the realisation of the building. This consortium realised the building with a focus on sustainability; for instance, Infoversum is built on reused concrete and recycled paper forms the basis for our ceilings. Heat and cold storage is also used to optimise energy consumption.
Besides focusing on sustainability in the building itself, the aim is to work with local suppliers as much as possible. This way, transport costs, for instance, are minimised. Local partnerships are also reflected in the interior, the energy supply and the choice of project partners. Now, and in the future!
History
The idea for Infoversum came from Professor Edwin Valentijn, special professor of astronomical information technology at the University of Groningen.
The design
Infoversum was designed by the Groningen group of architects Archiview.
Techniques applied
Nothing about Infoversum is standard; all parts custom-made, and realised by bare hands. Infoversum is human work, and we are proud of it. The construction technique used has its origins in traditional shipbuilding; experts call this technique the "monocoque method". The building is made of 83 steel plates, 8 mm to 10 mm thick, each one different in shape. Infoversum has no corners; the organic shape of the building meant that the dimensions of the steel plates listened very closely. Centraalstaal Construction designed, produced, cut, deformed and assembled all parts from a 3D base model.
Infoversum will open around June 2014.
Construction and installation is now in its final phase. KIVI has been invited by the Infoversum Foundation to take a look at the technology behind such a high-tech theatre at this stage. While everything is still open, we can get a good view of the concrete and steel construction and the audio-visual installations.
