Omrin
Description
Omrin (Afvalsturing Friesland) already processes many hundreds of millions of kilos of waste every year, in various waste streams. By far the largest part of this stream of waste we make suitable for material or product reuse. But we also turn it into 17 million cubic metres of biogas and give 2,500 tonnes of goods a second life through our recycling shops. Omrin (Afvalsturing Friesland and Fryslân Miljeu together) has a turnover of €110 million and employs 450 people.
A separation plant for residual waste and a separation plant for construction and demolition waste were built at Ecopark De Wierde. Activities such as dredging and silt treatment, soil remediation, green composting, mixing of mineral sealing constructions, collection and sorting of white and brown goods, car tyres and green composting were also taken up by Afvalsturing Friesland.
At Ecopark De Wierde, we also process all household waste and comparable industrial waste. In an advanced separation plant, we extract metal, paper and plastic from the waste. Organic material is also separated in this plant, which is then fermented to produce biogas.
New techniques extract the plastics from the residual fraction; we can't make it any easier. We call the technique that does the job REKAS in full: Recycling of Plastics through Automatic Sorting. Post-separation is the name given to this system. Through post-separation, more plastic can be removed from waste at Ecopark De Wierde in Oudehaske than citizens would offer separately.
It is mostly waste that you cannot separate at home, Omrin can do that. This takes place in the separation and processing plant (SBI) at Ecopark De Wierde.A special part of the SBI is the fermentation plant. Organic waste is processed there to produce biogas. The digestate that remains is then processed again to extract the sand.
At Ecopark De Wierde, we separate organic waste from household waste, such as food waste and vegetable matter. This organic waste is a valuable raw material for us. We ferment this material, which produces sustainable biogas, which we capture and convert into electricity. We use a quarter of the electricity produced for Ecopark De Wierde, which thus meets its own electricity needs. We supply the remaining three quarters to the power grid. There are still many sustainable options for utilising this biogas. For example, it can be processed to natural gas quality and then injected into the pipeline network. Omrin wants to do that at Ecopark De Wierde in the near future.
There is still one landfill site open in Fryslân, and it is at our Ecopark De Wierde in Oudehaske. Omrin manages and operates this landfill where dumping is only allowed with an exemption (but only if there is no other way!)
