Description

Omrop Fryslân is the regional broadcaster of Fryslân. Omrop Fryslân makes radio and television in Frisian. This makes it the only broadcaster in the Netherlands that does not broadcast in Dutch.

Omrop Fryslân is a company that wants to be connected to Fryslân and the Frisians. This broadcaster has the ambition to be Fryslân's leading information centre. The broadcaster's naming means: regional, recognisable, topical, independent, entertaining, great diversity and Frisian.
Omrop Fryslân is the so-called calamity transmitter for Fryslân. In serious calamities, the station functions as the official channel to inform people. Omrop Fryslân is connected to the so-called National Emergency Network for the purpose of alarm reporting. This extra-secure telephone network works alongside all ordinary communication lines.

In 1946, De Regionale Omroep Noord (RON) starts Dutch broadcasting for Fryslân, Groningen and Drenthe. In the 1950s, RON was renamed RONO and became part of the NOS. A Frisian-language programme was broadcast from the Prinsentuin in Leeuwarden. In 1978, RONO is split into three regional broadcasters: North, East and Friesland. In 1979 there is a snow winter and Radio Fryslân is on air for whole days with the latest news about the snow. This eventually results in more broadcasting time.
In 1988, Radio Fryslân starts as a completely independent broadcaster.

The name changes to Omrop Fryslân, because in addition to radio, television is also made. In 1994 Omrop Fryslân starts regional television. Via airwave and cable, Frisian television is broadcast every day from 17:50 for an hour and a half. In 1999, all departments of the broadcaster come under one roof at Zuiderkruisweg on the business park "De Hemrik" in Leeuwarden. Today, the broadcaster fully participates in all innovations in the field of new media and digitalisation.

During our visit, we are first welcomed with coffee and tea. After this, we are welcomed by one of the hostesses who also gives an introduction. This is followed by a second cup of coffee or tea, a company film and a tour of the company. The official part of the visit ends by attending a broadcast of "Faktor Freed". This is the weekly current affairs programme on Fridays in the television studio. There will be another consumption during the programme. After 20:15, there will be an opportunity to talk after the programme in the Mediacafé. Here, refreshments are at your own expense. Omrop Fryslân would like to know in advance if people want to use the Mediacafe. We therefore ask you to indicate this when registering for the visit.
