Description

Visit to the Puurwaterfabriek Nieuw Amsterdam and the sewage purification plant there.

When renewing oil extraction in Schoonebeek, NAM needs ultra-clean water for its steam injection. This water is produced by Nieuwater's "Puurwaterfabriek".
In the purewater plant, treated sewage water from Emmen's sewage treatment plant (rwzi) is reprocessed into ultrapure water for at least 25 years. For the time being, only NAM is a customer.

Flushing and cleaning flows are returned to the rwzi. This project is unique in the world.
Reprocessing rwzi effluent into ultrapure water takes place in a number of steps:

First, drum screens remove coarse particles, such as hairs and leaves. Then an ultrafiltration system of cassettes with very strong membrane straws removes the undissolved components from the water. The clean water from the straws goes to activated carbon filters with special bacteria to remove "nutrients" from the water. These nutrients are converted into water and carbon dioxide and the water so treated now has almost the quality of drinking water.

Finally, the dissolved minerals are removed from the water. First in 6-metre-long "pressure houses" of the membrane plants and then by electro deionisation.

The plant supplies 10,000 m3 of water a day to NAM.

In addition to the Purewater plant, we will also visit the sewage treatment plant there
