Description

With new production technologies and the further integration of ICT in the overall process of design, manufacturing and distribution, the industry is currently undergoing a radical change. The Netherlands needs to respond to this in time through Smart Industry.

The development of Smart Industry refers to the far-reaching digitalisation and interweaving of devices, means of production and organisations (the 'internet of things') that creates new ways of producing, new business models and new sectors. Smart Industries are industries that have a highly flexible production capacity in terms of the product (specifications, quality, design), volume (quantity), timing (delivery time), raw material and cost efficiency. This, and a highly digitally integrated supply chain, makes it possible to deliver 'customised' products and services for each customer. In Smart Industry, it becomes possible to create new business from large and diverse information flows on the basis of new, partly interacting, new technologies such as: big data processing, the Internet of Things, new generation adaptive robots, 3D printing, nanotechnology and miniaturisation and new sensor technology.

Partly due to the strong position of the Netherlands in design, system design and logistics, this development offers many opportunities for Dutch industry. Following the German programme 'Industrie 4.0′, there is now the Dutch initiative 'Smart Industry - Dutch Industry fit for the future'. Eastern Netherlands will also focus on this through a variety of initiatives.
Within the top sector policy, Smart Industry is an important cross-sectoral theme in the Netherlands. "The future belongs to Smart Industry. What we need is a decisive and decisive national Smart Industry approach. There is no time to lose".

More than 50 Fieldlab proposals have now been developed. Fieldlabs are practical environments in which companies and knowledge institutions purposefully develop, test and implement Smart Industry solutions. They also strengthen connections with research, education and policy on a specific Smart Industry theme
