Description

Poverty is a growing problem in the Netherlands. The Food Bank offers help.

Food banks originated in America in the 1970s and in Europe via France in 1984. The first Dutch Food Bank was set up by Sjaak and Clara Sies in Rotterdam in 2002.

The Food Bank gives obtained food free of charge to the poorest people who are no longer able to provide for themselves. Consequently, people do not simply qualify for a food package. Each application is checked by screeners.

The Food Bank receives food entirely free of charge from, for example,
wholesalers and shops, but also through collection campaigns by various social organisations, churches, schools, etc. A substantial part of this is food, which is still good for consumption but is about to be destroyed. The work of the Food Bank immediately prevents this food from being lost as food.

To be able to do this, much, much work of very different kinds has to be done. In doing so, the Food Bank "runs" entirely and exclusively on unpaid volunteers. So even the (national) directors and advisers do not get paid for this. Drivers collect the food, after which other volunteers pick it, sort it and often transfer it from large packs to small packs to be distributed in crates for the recipients. Once a week, volunteers distribute the food parcels to the customers.

On this excursion, the Food Bank Beilen lets us take a look
behind the scenes at everything that is involved.
