Description

Shovel factory Streuding has quite a history. In the 1930s, unemployed people were put to work digging canals in Westerwolde. Because until 1931 shovels were not manufactured in the Netherlands itself, they were imported. Vlagtwedder village blacksmith Albert Streuding therefore decided to establish the First Dutch Shovel Factory. Streuding's company thus made the shovels where they were desperately needed. At the time, brother Geert Streuding made the ash stems for the shovels. The shovel stems were made by brother Geert Streuding in the early years. Between 1935 and 1940, the Streuding brothers made not only shovels but also skates.

Immediately after the war, Streuding set out on a hired motorbike to sell his shovels. From a one-man business, the factory became a real enterprise with staff and a sales agent for contacts. When Albert stepped down in 1960, his daughter and her husband - a former confectioner - took over the business. The factory employed about 20 staff in the 1960s.

To this day, shovels and other tools are still manufactured here in the traditional way
