Description

Ten Kate Vetten has existed since 1920, when founder Sjoerd ten Kate started a wholesale business in butter, cheese and bacon in Musselkanaal. In the 1950s, they also started refining fat. At the time, Ten Kate obtained a patent for a process of fat crystallisation.

Now ninety years old, Ten Kate now makes high-quality animal fats and proteins that are edible for humans. For this purpose, they exclusively use slaughter products approved for human consumption. Ten Kate's products therefore mostly find their way into products for human consumption such as foodstuffs and cosmetics. For example, they are applied in margarine, sauces, ice cream and gelatine, but also in bakery ingredients, soups and creams.
Ten Kate is now one of the largest producers of edible animal fats and proteins in Europe and has global exports.

However, some of their products are also used in animal feeds, soaps and detergents. For example, they make products from the fats and proteins, which improve the digestibility, taste, smell and colour of animal feed.

In 2002, Ten Kate commissioned an entirely new factory in Ter Apelkanaal. Here they work closely together with the surrounding companies Gelita Group, Applied Food Biotechnology, AVEBE and with Essent. This mutual cooperation enables all these companies to integrate their processes extensively and exchange raw materials, residual products, process heat and energy. Together, this integration results in substantial savings in energy consumption and waste flows, for example.

Finally, Ten Kate Vetten in Ter Apelkanaal has also developed, together with the University of Groningen, a process to produce biodiesel from pig fat. This product, lard oil , is made from lard.
Production of this began in 2009. In this plant, pig fat is separated into olein and stearin. The olein, or lard-oil, is liquid at room temperature and the stearin is solid. Lard-oil is also used in the leather industry to soften leather, in the metal industry as rolling oil and in the lubricants industry.
