The Dutch branch in Hengelo was formerly known as Hollandse Signaalapparaten BV. Hollandse Signaal Apparaten (HSA) was founded in 1922 as NV Hazemeyers factory of signal devices. In 1956, Philips bought most of the shares from the Dutch government. In 1990, HSA was acquired from Philips by France's Thomson-CSF. In December 2000, the global name was changed to Thales. Among other things, radar systems and the command and control system Tacticos for naval vessels are developed by Thales in Hengelo.
