16 November 2013

DWINGELOO - The past few months have been busy in the KIVINIRIA region NORTH board. Has Astron already given its approval and are the folders already on order? Have the speakers been confirmed and how many participants are we actually sitting on? after all, 16 November is the day of the Lustrum. by now we know, it all worked out. Indeed, thickly it did.

After welcoming us with coffee and a pastry, Marco de Vos, Managing Director of Astron, welcomed us. He takes us on a journey through the universe and a few light years further, we find ourselves back with both feet on the ground. Time for a journey into the past. Dirk van Oerle, president of KIVINIRIA region NORTH, talks about the origins and importance of our region board. 15 years of activities pass in a nutshell, but with a clear focus on the future. For instance, we support the Top Sectors and the Technology Pact. As engineers, we make a difference. Ineke Donkervoort, chairman of the Executive Board of ROC Drenthe College, agrees. She gave an entertaining talk on improving the match between education and the labour market in the engineering sector in order to reduce the shortage of technical staff. This will only succeed if we give engineering a more challenging image. After a short break, there will be two parallel sessions with interesting speakers. Aleid Diepeveen, Director Business Development at the Netherlands Water Partnership, spoke enthusiastically about a cooperating water sector that has to yield something via knowledge, expertise and till. Prof Dr Ir Natasha Maurits' story is also fascinating. As professor of Clinical Neuroengineering at the UMC Groningen, she knows better than anyone how to show that measuring is knowing. Gijs Schoonderbeek of Astron also knows how to make us enthusiastic about UniBoard. And in another room, Pieter Willemsen, Team Manager Modern Power Systems & Grids at Energy Valley, shows us that the grid of the future has to deal with completely different parameters.

Food for thought makes one hungry and after a delicious lunch, there is something for everyone. So one could go and see the supercomputer, take a look in the control room of the radio telescope, meet the CAMRAS volunteers, learn something about the history of radio telescopes or be updated on LOFAR.

We could not have wished for a better venue and turnout. Thank you Astron and all attendees for a very successful day!
