Tocardo Tidal Energy.
Description
Tocardo Tidal Turbines has a strong focus on the offshore tidal energy market. Their turbines are designed to harvest energy from tidal currents.
Their mission is to contribute to predictable, clean and sustainable energy.
Tocardo wants to do this on a commercial basis and aims to become a leader in the tidal energy market. To achieve this, a sensible strategy has been chosen: start with small and luxury offshore tidal turbines.
In May 2013, Tocardo deployed its tidal turbine in the Dutch Wadden Sea for a full-scale offshore test and calibration programme. The turbine was attached to a barge and taken to the Marsdiep, known for its strong tidal currents.
The system, between barge and turbine, was optimised and will be used for future projects.
The 6.5-metre smart inverted rotor blade that was used is specifically designed for nearshore / offshore tidal sites. It accommodates tidal flows from multiple directions,by simply turning the blades away, without the use of a pitching mechanism.
A full "island grid", with a diesel generator, was installed on the barge to test the advanced control systems of the tidal turbine.
Tocardo has a successful track record of five years and has proven its technology to be highly reliable, efficient and cost-effective.
Tocardo Tidal Turbines and the tidal test centre have agreed to expand the tidal test facility in the Afsluitdijk by three turbines in a long-term partnership of 3-5 years. The three turbines will be placed in a matrix.
This turbine matrix is part of a larger project in the Netherlands: "Feeding Deltas". The Afsluitdijk is representative of an energy concept delta and is being used as a pilot project for the "Feeding Deltas" project. Other sources of renewable energy, such as blue energy are also included in the Afsluitdijk. "Nourishing Deltas" is a project involving Tocardo, Energy Valley, REDstack, Erasmus University, PWC, ECN, Oranjewoud, Deltares, and the Tidal Test Centre.
Tocardo Tidal Turbines, manufacturer of tidal and free-flow Water Turbines, and leading international law firm Clifford Chance have entered into a strategic partnership. This partnership will enable Tocardo to access specialised legal and administrative support for tidal energy projects, worldwide. Clifford Chance will provide legal expertise in renewable energy, unlocking its global network in the process. Coordinated by its Amsterdam office, Tocardo will be supported for SPV (special purpose vehicles) for tidal energy projects around the world
