Description

More than mechatronics

On Thursday 15 April 2010, Stichting Mechatronica Valley Twente, in collaboration with KIVI NIRIA, is organising its TValley congress for the seventh time. This congress on innovation and business for the high-tech manufacturing industry this time explores applications of mechatronics in various industrial and social sectors. Besides robotic surgery and rehabilitation, topics covered include smart solar cell production, advanced printing technology and high-tech material processing. Conclusion: the Netherlands does more than mechatronics!

The Dutch high-tech systems industry has a good reputation worldwide. This is mainly due to various Dutch-made mechatronic tours de force, such as ASML's lithography machines, FEI's electron microscopes and Philips Healthcare's scanners. However, the application possibilities of high-tech systems reach much further and the TValley congress will show that.

Medical technology
For instance, high-tech is on the rise in healthcare. Robotic surgery has long since ceased to be science fiction. Thanks to mechatronic solutions, surgeon robots can guarantee the accuracy, safety and ease of operation that, for example, 'keyhole surgery' requires. Robots are also emerging in rehabilitation, in this case for training patients recovering from a stroke, for example.

Industrial applications
Similar success stories can be found in the industrial field. The production of solar cells, for example, is a complex process with many steps that must be closely linked and efficiently automated - avoiding, of course, breakage of the fragile cells. Reliability, speed and subtle handling are the watchwords here, and mechatronics offers solutions for that too.

In short, the congress 'More than mechatronics' offers a varied overview of promising high-tech systems applications. At the same time, fundamental developments in metrology will also be discussed - because what you cannot measure, cannot work. All this makes the congress a must for professionals both in the Dutch high-tech manufacturing industry and research world, and in promising application areas.
