On 9 February 2016, "Women in Science: How does she do it?" took place at The Gallery at the University of Twente. Everyone was welcomed with a cup of coffee or tea. After opening by chairman of the day Maaike Helthuis, the presentations started. Annemieke Nijhof started with her career story, followed by Mirjam Bult and, finally, Elma Bassa. They told about their career choices and career planning in a traditionally male world.

After the inspiring stories of the three speakers, the group was split into two groups. One group went to eat at the restaurant and the other group attended the workshop: "What is your next step?" given by Springwerk. Various exercises were provided to tackle the next step in your life. During dinner, several propositions were discussed. For instance, on "Career advancement comes at the expense of a family life" and "That few women are at the top is a result of women's own choices". After half an hour, the groups switched activities. After the meal and workshop, Women in Science was able to conclude with drinks. After the event many positive reactions: inspiring speakers, good location, all in all a successful evening. Also a word of thanks to our sponsors Powered by Twente, The Chain Company and National Network of Female Professors. On to the next edition of Women in Science!

Description

How do other women engineers shape their careers and realise their ideals? Do you want to hear inspiring stories about what it's like to go to work soon after you finish your studies? Would you like to spar with other ladies about what it is like to work in the engineering world? Then don't miss Women in Science!

During this conference, three successful ladies will give their views on realising successes and career plans in this traditional male world. Stimulating and contemporary, tailored exactly to you as a top technical woman.

There will also be a workshop by Springwerk (Litty van der Wal and Miriam van Kreij): "What is your next step?".
What is the next step in your work, your studies or just privately? Do you want to harness the wisdom of your unconscious and your body? Then take a first step in this workshop. You will get personal insights and practical tips to apply immediately in your work or life. In this workshop, especially for technical women, you will discover which concrete step you can take now to start your desired development.

This conference starts later in the afternoon and we will provide a hot meal in between. During the meal, you will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with the speakers, or with other visiting ladies who, like you, are curious to know how others are doing.
After a joint closing, there will be an opportunity to network with the other attendees over a drink.

This event is organised by KIVI Students Twente in collaboration with the Network of Female Engineers and the Female Faculty Network Twente (FFNT). Made possible by a contribution from Powered by Twente and The Chain Company.
