Automation in the Maritime Industry
Description
PLEASE NOTE: location changed to Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (was previously location Prinsenhof in Best).
The lecture starts with an overview of the maritime industry that gives insight into its size and diversity, and who are key players in this highly international industry. The Netherlands still plays a very prominent role in it. Examples are given of large projects in the dredging industry, how oil and gas fields at 3 km water depth are found and developed, and how offshore wind farms are constructed.
Afterwards, the increasingly important automation on board dredging and offshore ships and platforms is discussed. Good crew is expensive and hard to find. To what extent can automation take over tasks? How big is the step towards autonomous installations? Can drone technology offer a solution in this?
Robert Plat, R&D Offshore Manager at MTI Holland, IHC Merwede's research institute, hopes for a lively discussion with those who want to know more about the offshore industry and how it might develop into the future.
