Description

New Business Development / Venturing is the breeding ground for Philips to create future new business units that develop, produce and sell new categories of products and services. They will contribute significantly to Philips' profitable growth in the future. The products and services of these business initiatives are not only new to Philips but are also new to the market. So, development of a product alone is not enough but market development is also very important.

In her presentation, Corina Kuiper first discusses the different forms of innovation and especially the differences between product development and business creation. To better manage the granularity of innovation, Philips has developed a 4x4 innovation matrix. Philips uses different frameworks and practices for the different forms of innovation.

Developing new business within a large company is very difficult. Pitfall is the 'big company syndrome'. Big companies can deal well with babies and adults but have very great difficulty in raising adolescents. Corina will discuss the root causes of this problem and how to deal with them.

A prerequisite for success is that a company recognises that there are different stages in the development from an idea (baby) to a growing and profitable business (adults)
Each stage has its own specific characteristics and therefore requires a different way of working, organisational structure, culture / mentality and performance - indicators. Philips has chosen Bell Mason's 'stage gating' framework and has implemented it globally within Philips. Bell Mason has created a common working method and language for managing and assessing ventures within Philips
